Berkeley
An interesting and eye-opening day. We were only 63 miles from Berkeley when we started off this morning and got here about 2 pm and by the time we stopped we had done 76 miles in about 5 hours! We could have taken the 880 and got here in about an hour but chose instead to have Google maps get us here avoiding any highways.
Some of the spots we drove through were lovely, particularly around the Morgan Hill area. Then it seemed that we went through areas of homes, condos, strip malls and then industrial areas and then repeat over and over again. Unfortunately we couldn't find any particular reason to stop and explore although we did stop at an indoor mall just to stretch our legs.
If we hadn't been too disheartened and subdued we would have stopped at Lake Merritt in Oakland but decided on our way home for sure we will stop and have a walk around. There are some stunning views of the skyline with very unique buildings around the lake. It's a lovely spot. This is what the website says: Lake Merritt in Oakland, California is one of the most unique urban spaces in the United States. Its 3.4 mile heart-shaped shoreline in the center of an exceptionally diverse city is the place for man and nature to migrate, meet and mingle daily. This tidal lagoon is also home to the oldest designated wildlife refuge (1870) in the United States.
The drive through Oakland was so disheartening, so poverty stricken, filthy, falling apart and so sad. It's been like that except in a few areas for many years but it's still very hard to see and just gets worse every year.
Hopefully the weather will be better when we're on our way home as a big storm is coming in tonight. [Just got an alert of evacuations back home because of this same storm]
Went for a walk in the neighborhood and got a very big kick out of it; it feels like the Danforth in Toronto about 40 years ago!
Then had a lovely dinner at La Mission with my cousin Jeanette and got caught up on all the family doings in the Bay area.
